Settlers Rock

Settlers Rock sits along North Salem Road (Route 116), at the edge of the Ridgefield Cemetery complex, near Fairlawn Cemetery.

Tradition says a party of five men exploring the town in May 1708 for settlement spent their first night here, building fires at the base of the boulder to keep away wild animals (wolves, bears and panthers inhabited these regions at the time).

In 1958, a plaque was mounted on the rock, marking it as a historic site. This photo by The Bridgeport Post dates from earlier in the 1950s and show several gravestones.
