The
Gamaliel Smith Cemetery on lower West Lane, a little north of Country
Club Road, contains around a dozen headstones. At the far left in the top
photo is the gravestone of Gamaliel and Polly Northrop Smith, shown in
detail at left. Their daughter married Jared Nash, the author of the Diary
of Jared Nash, covering 1865 and 1866. This cemetery has one of the
more elegant and better maintained stonewalls of any of the town's
smaller, family cemeteries, probably because owners of nearby mansions
rebuilt them to blend with their estate grounds during the early 20th
Century. Today (summer 2001), no one is maintaining the cemetery's
grounds, which are overrun with weeds and saplings.
